Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking applicants for a Research & Development Scientist. The scientist is responsible for research, development and leading a small team in the areas of detection and verification of chemical agents in munitions. As part of this R&D effort, several techniques shall be developed and used in the development and deployment of specialized equipment, including field deployable equipment. The techniques to be developed will include digital radiography and computed tomography for system and materials characterization, as well as other physics-based methods for detection of bulk currency. These techniques shall be robust enough to function in challenging environments.
Establish working relationship with customers, technical representatives and field operations personnel for chemical, materials, and container inspection.
As a principal investigator, independently set up and perform a variety of unique laboratory research studies to prove new principles and concepts related to digital radiography and computed tomography and other physics based techniques for detection and analyses of systems and materials.
Take a leadership role in developing new programs associated with physics based techniques, and further enhance the capabilities of the department in this area. As Principal Investigator opportunities to develop the program in collaboration with materials research personnel at INL is an expectation.
Responsible for the guiding personnel in the collection and interpretation of laboratory data. Responsible for planning research tasks and assessing and applying a wide range of research techniques to those tasks. Responsible for conducting and documenting work at an appropriate quality level.
Serve as a technical resource to others and will mentor and provide oversight of junior level scientists. Serve as a major or sole contributor to the generation of reports, publications, and proposals and will contribute to the generation of additional proposals and concepts submitted for external funding.
Represent the Materials Science & Engineering Department and INL with sponsors and peers through programmatic and technical presentations. Engage in external technical leadership associated with relevant technical conferences or national/international in areas related to main mission as described above.
Provide input to departmental business plans and perform the duties of a line management principal investigator for assigned work activities.
BS degree in science or engineering plus 5 years relevant experience or MS degree in science or engineering plus 3 years relevant experience or a PhD in science or engineering plus 2 years relevant experience.
PhD in applicable science (Physics, Chemistry) or engineer (Materials, Mechanical, Electrical/Electronics) or related field is preferred.
Experience in development and application of physics-based characterization and inspection systems.
