Summary of Work

The Protection and Advocacy Project is a statewide agency with the federally mandated purpose of protecting and advocating for the rights of people with disabilities in North Dakota. Clients of the Project include individuals of all ages, with physical and/or mental disabilities, who have legal rights issues in a variety of disability-related areas.

The Disability Advocate provides assistance and advocacy on disability-related, legal rights issues to people with disabilities; conducts investigations of alleged abuse and neglect; and, provides training to people with disabilities, parents, guardians, service providers, and other professionals on disability rights issues within a multi-county region. The advocate serves on agency committees and coordinates with other P&A staff to ensure that quality services are provided. Occasional travel is required, including some overnight stays.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in special education, sociology, or social work and three years of professional experience working with people with disabilities; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree and four years of professional experience working with people with disabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Work experience serving people with a variety of disabilities including developmental disabilities, mental illness, and physical disabilities or traumatic brain injury.
  • Work experience that required research, analysis, interpretation, and/or application of rules, regulations, statute, or complex policies.
  • Work experience that required investigative type of duties.
  • Work experience making presentations to a group.
  • Work experience that involved advocating on behalf of other people.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Competent in using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent understanding and knowledge of disability-related service delivery systems in ND.
