Assists in directing area office operations. Manages employees involved in construction, design, maintenance, survey, laboratory activities and office operations. Reports to an Area Engineer II or higher, who has full authority for approval of all work. Responsible for the operations of the area office in the absence of the Area Engineer. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. [Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product]. NOTE: Each area office is allocated no more than one Assistant Area Engineer.
The essential duties for this job include:
Assists Area Engineer in projecting personnel and equipment needed for each project; as required responds for emergency situations/conditions to assist with office activities.
Conducts pre-construction, Employee Forum and safety meetings.
Keeps abreast of current transportation design innovations, modifications, laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
Drives state vehicle in order to monitor traffic control plans.
Plans and schedules work of construction personnel and provides them on the job training.
Prepares and recommends field changes and supplemental agreements.
Prepares and reviews monthly and final estimates and final construction reports.
Resolves public complaints.
Reviews plans prepared by area office personnel; checks designs, specifications and estimates.
Reviews utility permits.
Works with governmental officials on behalf of the Area Engineer.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Assistant Area Engineer I : 6 years in Transportation engineering (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent) Must have one (1) year supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience. Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
Assistant Area Engineer II:
7 years in transportation engineering including 3 years as a Licensed Professional Engineer (LPE)
(Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)
Must have three (3) years supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.
Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licensed Prof Engineer
Class C Drivers License
Safety Impact Certificate (completed at time of hire)
Professional engineers licensed in another state, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the Texas Board Of Professional Engineers within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
